How to Make House Guests Feel Welcome

We share our favorite style secrets just in time for your company’s arrival.

Volunteering to host Thanksgiving this year was a great idea—until you realized that you’re one bedroom short on space. And your linen closet barely has enough room for your family’s towels, let alone extras for guests. Hosting company overnight can be stressful, but it doesn’t need to be. The trick lies in prepping your space ahead of time. We polled our Instagram followers to share their design dilemmas on this very topic, then selected a few favorites for our senior merchandising manager April Head to tackle below.

@swellpeople Our guest room is also our ten-year-old daughter’s bedroom—she moves out when we have visitors. How can I make it feel welcoming and fresh each time without a total redo?
“A room that needs to change its personality can be done with a few switcheroos. Think of the biggest statement in the room: the bedding. Either neutralize it with soft linens and new shams or layer it with a graphic quilt to play up a modern vibe. It’s nice to include a tray with some sundries that your guest can use while visiting: a nice, thick hand towel, toothbrush and toothpaste, mints—even a carafe of spa water.”

@madelinekang We don’t have a lot of storage at our place and are continuously struggling to hide the few guest towels/linens that we have. Is there a storage option that can help with all this clutter that is still cute and inconspicuous?
“Adding more storage in the bathroom is a necessity for almost every home, and we offer a couple of options that help hide it all. Our SAIC cache storage cabinet is sleek and has a white hi-gloss finish. The drawer pulls out to offer up three shelves for storage. And if floor space is an issue, our Hyde white wall-mounted storage shelf can save room by hanging on the wall. It can be mounted horizontally or vertically so it can work in almost any space, and we’ve even lined up several together for a custom built-in look.”

@leepatola We have a small apartment but would love to make it an overnight option for guests since it’s fairly far from transit. How can we make our guest area feel like a private oasis even though it’s so tiny?
“Even tiny spaces can feel special. The trick is to decorate it with items that work together to create a mood. It can be natural and cozy or bright and airy. In this small space, we combined a daybed that can become a double bed, a side table that tucks into the smallest spaces, and a display cabinet that doubles as a bar to easy-to-reach nightcaps.”

@ohtomtom how do you pick a perfect book and reading lamp to have at the ready for any overnight guest? Also, how much is too much chocolate for the guests…and hosts😁🍫
“It’s always good to end the day with a laugh. So I like to offer overnight guests some humor with books by Mindy Kaling or Tina Fey. And who thinks too much chocolate could ever be a bad thing?”
